Tips from the experts: How to blowdry your hair at home

Blow-drying can be healthy and beneficial for your hair if done properly.

Blow-drying is a great way to achieve soft, silky and frizz-free hair. While a salon blowdry will achieve the best finish, you can still get a fantastic result at home. To do this you need to learn how to blowdry your own hair.

First of all, you need the right tools – a hairdryer and a hairbrush.

It is important that your hairdryer has the appropriate extensions – a concentrator nozzle for straight hair and a diffuser for curly hair.

The right hairbrush depends on the length of your hair, and we recommend for short hair, you use a straight brush with nylon bristles; for medium length hair a round nylon bristle brush; and for long hair a round brush with a ceramic core.

Once you have the appropriate tools, it is onto the blowdry:

  1. After washing your hair, wrap it in a towel and leave to dry for 20 minutes;
  2. After that, at the lowest temperature setting and from a distance, dry your hair with light circular movements. Dry 80% of your hair before you start blow-drying. If you start blow-drying your hair while it is still wet, you will damage your hair, and if it is too dry it won’t be effective;
  3. When 80% of your hair is dry, comb it;
  4. Divide the hair into several strands depending on its length (around 6-10 strands);
  5. Place the hairbrush under each strand and start drying from the roots to the ends;
  6. Use the hairdryer to direct the heat to the hair on the hairbrush. Pull the hairbrush through your hair while moving the hairdryer in the same direction;
  7. Blowdry each strand several times from the roots to the ends;
  8. When the whole hair is dry, lightly brush with a straight comb;
  9.  Finally, and for longer lasting results, use a little hairspray, although excessive use can be damaging.

The duration of the blowdry depends on the length/thickness of your hair and how big a hairbrush you choose – a bigger hairbrush allows you to dry more hair, and shortens the drying time.

Extra tips:

  • For the best result, use volumizing products like mousse. Apply it generously to the hair roots before you start to blowdry.
  • Spray your hair before with a heat protector.
  • Even with protection spray, you should avoid blow-drying your hair with excessive heat. Heat damage leaves hair brittle and dry, and is irreversible. The only way to fix it, is to remove it.
